The Time I Wrote About Yuri

We got into a brief discussion in comments over at y!Gallery about what Yuri is, and what Yuri isn’t. My thoughts?

You will NOT FIND YURI
in ANY ‘Hentai’ manga for men.

You will find a SHIT TON of
female on female hot sex action,
in hentai for men.

But that action
is NOT YURI.

Yuri, in Japan, is a small genre of comics and fiction, written for women by women. It celebrates romance, sex, drama, angst, passion, friendship, and life, between original female characters; or, it is showcased in ani-paro characters [yes there is yuri fan doujinshi]. Now there are Yuri titles only about sex, BUT…they are often illustrated from a different POV, other than that of a heterosexual Japanese man. If you go to a gallery site and it says YURI, and all you see there are hentai doujinshi and manga featuring chicks licking and grabbing at each others ten-ton-titties, sharing double-dongs, and spewing juice all over the room, and each other…IMHO, you’re looking at a Japanese male fantasy. I don’t feel that’s Yuri. That’s Hentai.

There’s legitimate Yuri Manga I guess, check out YuriCon.org listing of Yuri Manga from Amazon.com Japan. Yuri fans tend to gravitate toward, and create, Yuri titles because they love the aspect of exploring women only, in conflicts, sexual situations, traumatic events, romances, and just plain life in general.

Does Crat like Yuri? No. Yuri books tend to make me think about my place in sexual dynamics and relationships, and life. I get enough of that inner-reflection crap with Mr. Gynocrat, and I don’t want it in my sexy-manga-fun-time.

Some Yuri fans like intellectual, romantic, or drama-driven comics and fiction, they approach it in a much more heartfelt way, because it’s about them, as women; whereas a majority of us straight BL fen tend to look for just smut when we go male on male manga hunting. To tell the truth, many lesbians I know, love BL for just the smut. When these friends want something meaningful and sexy, they go Yuri hunting? 0_0;
